Driven by economic hardship, limited legal pathways to the US, and often misled by smugglers’ promises, migrants, including Indians, are increasingly risking their lives crossing the treacherous Darién Gap. This inhospitable jungle between Colombia and Panama presents numerous challenges, from grueling terrain and natural dangers like wild animals and diseases, to the threat of criminal violence at the hands of smugglers and armed groups. These organized crime networks exploit migrants’ desperation, charging exorbitant fees for passage despite the known risks. The journey often leads to a humanitarian crisis, with migrants facing overcrowding, lack of basic necessities, hunger, thirst, and illness in makeshift shelters. Yet, despite these immense dangers, the hope for a better future in the United States continues to fuel this perilous migration.
